10 Most Confusing Things About Barbara in Genshin Impact

Barbara Page is the Shining Idol of Mondstadt, Jean’s little sister, and a Deaconess of the Favonius Church. She is also a secret fangirl and a big fan of the band Genshin Impact. For someone who doesn’t leave Mondstadt very often, Barbara has a lot going on.

10 Most Confusing Things About Barbara in Genshin Impact

But as players learn more about this cute healer, they find that some parts of her story and/or character don’t make sense. Let’s look at what these parts are and why they are there.

1

Why Did She Get A Hydro Vision?

Water Vision
Why Did She Get A Hydro Vision?

First of all, why exactly does Barbara use Hydro Vision? In some stories, like Avatar: The Last Airbender, water can heal, but in Genshin Impact, every element can heal, depending on who is using it (though Cryo has the most healers).

Then why did Barbara get a Hydro Vision instead of an Anemo Vision? Her sister Jean has an Anemo Vision, Barbara’s whole religion is based on praying to Barbatos the Anemo Archon, and it seems like wind is a much better choice than water for moving or amplifying music.

Why don’t people worry about the attacks she makes?

Why don’t people worry about the attacks she makes?

Even though Genshin Impact is a sandbox game, there are still some things that the player can’t do. Attacking NPCs is one of these things, but they still get scared when the player attacks “near” them. Well, most people get scared when they see them, but Barbara doesn’t.

When Barbara and a few other characters attack NPCs close by, the NPCs cheer instead of running away. This is probably a reference to Barbara’s job as Mondstadt’s Idol, which means that everyone trusts her, especially a fan named Albert, but it’s not like she’s doing magic tricks with water. These are the same attacks that could kill Hilichurls out in the field, so why are people cheering when it happens right next to them?

3

Why did she only read about idols in Alice’s magazine?

Idol Magazine
Why did she only read about idols in Alice’s magazine?

In this game, there are a lot of NPCs who still have a lot to say about themselves. In fact, there are so many that Mihoyo made an official manga/Webtoon to help explain some of them. Alice, Klee’s mother, is one of these characters that fans are dying to meet. Alice is an odd “scientist” who is currently travelling the world of Teyvat.

However, there are many signs that Alice might have come from a different world, like The Traveler, because she brought a magazine about idols with her. She shows Barbara this magazine, which is what makes Barbara decide to become an idol in the first place.

But why did Barbara only learn that from the magazine? Wouldn’t it have been full of things she had never heard of? It’s like if someone in the Middle Ages read a science magazine but only learned about “sandwiches” from an ad in it.

Who Chooses to Go Around the World Wearing a Dress?

Who Chooses to Go Around the World Wearing a Dress?

This isn’t just a problem with Barbara; it’s a problem with a lot of the characters in Genshin Impact. This game is mostly about two things: fighting and moving around. Characters are always fighting or climbing, so why do so many of them wear clothes that aren’t fit for this? Mondstadt’s Idol is going around in a full-dress climbing mountains and windmills!

Again, this isn’t just her problem. Mona runs around in heels, Venti runs around in a cape, and Lisa isn’t at all dressed for physical activity. Clearly, this is just because the designers cared more about how their plans looked than how useful they would be, but Barbara’s is especially bad.

5

Why does she always look so tanky?

Tanky
Why does she always look so tanky?

In Genshin Impact, Barbara’s ability to heal scales with one of her stats, just like most healers. Noelle uses a greatsword to defend herself. Attack is what Qiqi does. Qiqi is a zombie who has been given the power of the Adepti.

But Barbara, who is a healer and usually stays out of fights, her best builds are all about getting the most Max HP? This just doesn’t make much sense in the context. Players could see why Qiqi’s attack scaling or Noelle’s healing based on defence made sense, but Barbara’s is a little tougher to understand.

It would have made more sense to have it scale based on her Elemental Mastery or something, since that would have shown that the more, she learned to control Hydro, the better she could heal. But it’s likely that Mihoyo just needed a healer whose effectiveness increased with Max HP, and Barbara was the best choice for that.

Did Mihoyo’s elemental skills really not have anything to do with music?

10 Most Confusing Things About Barbara in Genshin Impact
Did Mihoyo’s elemental skills really not have anything to do with music?

Why doesn’t the Idol character, who sings for a living and makes music out of Hydro Energy, have any special music that plays when she uses her abilities? This one is a huge letdown for Mihoyo in two ways.

First, a small detail like this would have made people spend a lot of money on Barbara. Two, they decided to give her away for free to players. We’re not complaining, but Barbara is amazing, especially for the Spiral Abyss.

But it would have made more sense to give everyone Jean for free since she is more of a “Adventurer.” In any case, players know that Mihoyo can add this musical feature because it already works for the Widsith Catalyst, but for some reason, the Idol of Mondstadt is shockingly quiet on the battlefield.

What is a Spicy Energy Drink, anyway?

Spicy Energy Drink
What is a Spicy Energy Drink, anyway?

One of Barbara’s chat lines, “Keeping One Refreshed,” says that the Traveler can try one of her “Spicy Energy Drinks.” But what is that? Barbara likes spicy food, which is clear from other parts of her bio. But how does one make a…spicy energy drink in this fantasy world?

And where did she even learn the term “Energy Drink”? Alice showed her that magazine. Did it come from there? Or did she just happen to come up with the same word that people use today?

8

Why is Barbara the only one who can summon their element where they want it?

Summons At Location
Why is Barbara the only one who can summon their element where they want it?

Barbara’s way of using Elemental Magic is even more unique than all the other things that make her stand out. Everyone else in the game who is a “Mage” or a “Catalyst” has to project or throw their Element at the enemies. Klee throws bombs, Ningguang shoots rocks, and Lisa sends out lightning bolts.

But for some reason, Barbara is able to…bring water to where the enemy is? Mihoyo’s answer would probably be something like, “Barbara changes the properties of the by using condensation and water vapour,” but she’s the only one in the game who can do this! Wouldn’t it make more sense for someone like Klee or Albedo, who are more interested in science, to use their Element in this way?

9

Why does she have a cinematic elemental burst?

No Music Actually Plays
Why does she have a cinematic elemental burst?

Her Elemental Burst is another thing that makes many fans think Barbara was meant to be a 5-star character from the start. This isn’t a hard and fast rule, but so far it seems like 5-Star characters’ Elemental Bursts are more “cinematic.” Why is Barbara only a 4-star if she has this? It’s nice that she has it, since it lets her heal without taking damage, but it doesn’t make much sense why she gets this bonus effect and a lot of other 4-stars don’t.

10

Spends all day praying to Barbatos, but doesn’t even look up the Archon in her vision.

Hydro Archon
Spends all day praying to Barbatos, but doesn’t even look up the Archon in her vision.

And lastly, do people with Elemental Visions ever wonder about the Archon who gave it to them? After Barbara got her Vision, did she suddenly want to go to Fontaine, where the Hydro Archon lives? What about Diluc?

All of a sudden, he can use Pyro energy, but he doesn’t care about The Lady of Fire in Natlan or why she chose him. Barbara is a Deaconess for a Church that worships the Anemo Archon, but her powers come from the Hydro Archon. This just seems strange.
